Children at Rugare Feeding Centre

In August of 2007 when we traveled to Zimbabwe we had no idea what we were getting into. It was our first time to Africa and our first mission-type trip.

One of the first days there, we were taken to a feeding centre that had been functional for about a year. This gave us an idea of what we were building and the impact it would have on the community. We learned they fed approximately 150 children per day at that centre. The children go to school in the morning, come to the feeding centre for lunch, then receive biblical instruction and practical learning such as how to plant and grow a garden, and play games in the afternoon. We were told they love to sing and dance. The meal they receive at the feeding centre is their one meal a day (now they receive two meals a day).

Group Building Musana Feeding Centre

We spent 7 of 10 days working on the construction of a feeding centre in the rural area of Musana. We met many wonderful people, learned about their families and their lifestyle, and experienced a culture where they take care of others who are in need, bringing them into their homes even though they may not have the means to provide for themselves. They also have a very strong faith that continues to give them hope.

While we were working on the project, Chief Chikowore of the Musana area, as well as nine of twenty-nine village heads, came to watch and speak to our team at the construction site. Each one expressed their thanks and they explained that the team’s presence is important, as villagers remain skeptical that it is a government project until they witness foreigners working there and interacting with the people.

Reverend Emmanuel Zihove, who heads Oasis of Grace Ministries and overseas orphan care for six South African countries told us, “Your presence has already impacted a lot of people. I know what we are doing here will speak volumes to the villagers.”

We are happy that we have made an impact, but we don't want it to stop with our arrival home. There is so much more we can do to help. We hope you will join us in making an impact on the lives of Zimbabweans.
